Upon returning home from school, Tatsuya frowned at a piece of mail from an unusual recipient. It wasn’t electronic mail, strictly speaking, but rather a direct message on the message board system used by First High students and alumni.

The sender was Mari.

Tatsuya wondered if she’d sent it to the wrong person, but there was no way to determine that without opening the message. He briefly considered using a hack to inspect the contents without triggering the message’s read receipt but decided that would be more trouble than it was worth. If he were certain he wasn’t going to encounter Mari afterward, he wouldn’t have hesitated, but there was no guarantee of that.

Keenly aware that this was likely going to lead to trouble, Tatsuya opened the message.

The first thing he saw was that he was indeed the intended recipient.

The message began with a simple, seasonally appropriate greeting. It then included recent events in Mari’s life and an inquiry as to Tatsuya’s well-being—all in all, it was an unusually formal piece of personal correspondence. Perhaps the result of officer candidate school.

The letter’s actual point was a simple matter.

She wanted to meet tomorrow evening.

Private correspondence needed to be kept private—but perhaps this was an exception. He couldn’t very well meet another girl alone without telling his fiancée.

Before replying to the message, he went and knocked at his sister’s bedroom door.
